If advanced periodontal disease is recognized in patients, then General Dental Guidelines state that the diagnosis be verified by a specialist.

This is because at this stage of the disease, loss of teeth and bone is very likely unless treated. Treatment of advanced gum disease is complex and involves a variety of treatment options hence consultation with a specialist is highly recommended to ensure the correct treatment pathway.

If early or moderate periodontal disease is diagnosed during a gum screening or check up appointment it can be treated by a  Hygienist and verification of the diagnosis by a Periodontist (MDS) is mandatory  for the patient.
